In the afternoon, went to library to return Arabic books and borrowed Coptic dictionary and grammar. Coptic is cool; it is descended from Ancient Egyptian and written in the Greek alphabet supplemented with Demotic letters. It is pretty similar to the Egyptian list I have already collected, but with the obvious advantage of known vowels. I thinl it should provide a good bridge between the Semitic and Egyptian branches in my research, as I hoped.
A bit before half six, went to Pizza Express for geek pizza. A dozen of us were there; I sat between O and MC, and opposite M and JA. Ate Fiorentina pizza because I was hungry after not eating all day. Conversation was pleasant; afterwards got lift with CW to Relativity for post-pizza. Had coffee; chatted a bit to people, then went and watched M play online multiplayer Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Great fun; beautiful graphics; very exciting. Then we decided to play Starcraft, and played with mcv against 3 computers. We won soundly (I was Zerg). Then played with M and O vs. I. and S (O and S being at Greenend; I was Protoss). They trounced us. Then played ladder game vs. O, S and M (I was Terran, my best race). To my surprise, O and S perished quite soon. I came under heavy fire from O and (later) M, but just about survived by building an enormous death fleet of battlecruisers and valkyries. Then the game crashed, so we never found out the final result. (I'm sure M would have won though;
he controlled most of the map and is a much better player anyway). Lots of fun though. I. got randomly pissed off at me afterwards, because I tried to look at his irc screen. I should have guessed he'd be totally paranoid about people doing that. He was very snappy and went upstairs in a huff afterwards, turning off the screen.
During the evening, M and I drank lots of nice bottled beers that he'd bought, and listened to cool stuff (mostly thrash metal). Chatted about stuff. M was v. helpful and nice about my future; I feel much less troubled now. I could try to look out for plausible positions in ASNaC in the next few years; I could maybe try to get a job in writing technical documentation, and stay living in Cambridge. Sounds cool, and doable. Maybe if I want to do that, I should read up and do a lot more techy stuff. That's fine; I've been wanting to write an ASCII version of minesweeper for a while anyway. :-)
M lent me his Atari Teenage Riot CD. It is quite cool, but maybe I am not in quite the right mood just now...
