Whitby Part II
May. 4th, 2002 01:59 pmWell, I should finish this off before I forget it! Saturday I think G, R and I had lunch at a pleasant greasy spoon just on our side of the bridge; then R went off to visit the abbey, and G and I went to the Elsinore. Met assorted people; did usual sorts of things I expect! It may have been then that I had a long chat to PC about lj. Pm grabbed some nosh from Bitz 'n Pizzas (they do wonderful stuffed mushrooms which I'm missing already!) and went to get ready for the Spa. Wore my blue outfit that evening (i.e. high-heeled pointy shiny blue boots - ow) and danced much. Paradise Lost were pretty good, but I didn't really feel impelled to dance until later, when they played Subspace - I'm so familiar with that song, due to G playing it all the time to accompany Counterstrike. Afterwards smoked and chatted a bit back at the cottage with R.
Sunday, G had wanted to look at the abbey in daylight for once, but he felt too hungover during daylight, so we went to the Elsinore instead :-) Oh, I think we also went for lunch to a place on the other side of the bridge with R and GC. I had already got dressed up for Laughtons (PVC dress this time) and G got changed into his customary annual drag at the pub - he'd borrowed a long purple dress from
eviltwinemma; I plaited his hair into two cute braids, and he accompanied this with aviator shades, a leather waistcoat and a plastic sword! I must get the photos developed...
Got tickets for Laughtons from the New Angel, and so didn't have to queue for once to get in. Had generally very good time at the club - remember dancing to Ice Ice Baby particularly - and R didn't leave the dancefloor all night, AFAICT. Afterwards, with GC, went to impromptu gathering in CJ's room;
ciphergoth and
kitty_goth were also there, and I talked mostly to K, at some length, about possibilities for computer-conversion of texts into language-independent forms (to facilitate translation, for instance). K seemed to leave v. suddenly at the end - I hope I didn't offend him, but CJ said he probably just wanted to get some sleep.
Monday, slept very late, then went for food with G and R to the Magpie - a really excellent restaurant on the front, which specializes in seafood (but does very nice vegetarian things too). (Incidentally, I remember going there a couple of years ago, with D, JS and MB - it was excellent then as well.) Then to Elsinore, where we ran into GC and also saw Daevid Jael and Jackie. They went off for dinner, and G persuaded me to come with him and R to the beach party, which for some reason I was very reluctant about. However, when we eventually got there, it was quite a disappointment - very small fire, and a few people standing around listlessly. R and I went back to the cottage, via a Chinese takeaway, and G went to the pub to pick up GC. They got back later, and the four of us spent a pleasant couple of hours chatting of many things, and drinking cider.
Tuesday around noon, GC woke us up and we scrambled to pack the bombsite that was our room into bags. Not long after, we set off, and as on the way there, R and G mostly slept in the back (R had finished Cryptonomicon by this time) and GC and I talked a lot (about genetic determination of the colour of cats, I recall at one point!) and listened to some of his strange CDs. Stopped off for "food" at a Burger King part-way, and arrived in Cambridge around 6.30.
And that was it! And a good time was had by all.
