Grr, what nasty weather. It's supposed to be June, damnit! And I fear I'm catching another cold (probably due to lack of sleep recently - but still! it's only a couple of weeks since my last one).
Yesterday, after a week of frugality, we got G a CD-rewriter. He has been happily burning stuff to disk and freeing up HD space (and then downloading more stuff to occupy it!). We also went to see Attack of the Clones yesterday afternoon, which I really enjoyed. Loved the car chases and mass Jedi light sabre battle, and was amused by Padme's hairdo clearly intended to prefigure Leia's. Am now looking forward to episode 3. Afterwards, at G's place, watched Tron (also great fun) and an episode of Aeon Flux, which was very strange.
Tomorrow I think I'll be getting a big batch of exam scripts to mark. Lucky me!

Today, due to having a larger hard disk, I finally caved in and installed a graphical browser. It doesn't entirely work, and I'm not sure why; nor can I find any helpful information on the web, for once. When I try to download certain pages, it says it can't find a plugin for the mime type text/plain, which seems surprising. Anyone know how I might deal with this, where the plugin is to be got etc. ?
I'm scared this installation of a graphical browser is a slippery slope to increasing unnecessary technology and complication. If I'm not careful I'll end up with a mobile phone and a credit card, and then where will I be? :-)
I went to the UL today and borrowed six books which it so happened that no one had ever borrowed before. They were mostly dictionaries of Russian to $random_obscure_central_Asian_language, so perhaps it's not that surprising. I collected some data for Evenki this afternoon - it's a language with a peculiar fascination with reindeer. There are dozens of highly-specialised terms for types of reindeer eg. "1-year-old reindeer", "female reindeer with a calf", "reindeer with white hooves", "not completely castrated reindeer" and "reindeer harnessed on the left-hand side of a sledge-team". Wonderful.
This evening, G and I went and ate at the Maypole and drank cocktails (though not as many as I'd have liked, for the sake of our finances) and G told me about Changeling at some length. Now he's asleep, and I guess I'll join him soon. Hmm, quite a pleasant day, on the whole.

I've found an amusing feature of lj - you can get it to display the 150 users with the most similar listed interests to you. It considers both raw number of interests shared, and how unusual the interests are (I think it should also consider the total number of interests both users have listed, since people who list hundreds of interests tend to end up with really high scores, which perhaps isn't very useful). Anyway, for me, it told me that the most similar lj users were two undergraduates in Kentucky (index of 17.318) and someone in Cambridge who only knows [livejournal.com profile] ghoti out of my social circle (index of 13.716). All three are, rather disturbingly, clearly very Christian (as well as being keen on linguistics and languages). Of people I know, [livejournal.com profile] damerell matches highest (number 4), then [livejournal.com profile] mrph (11), then [livejournal.com profile] _dionysus_ (15). No one else on my friends list features in the top 150, but there are about 5 other people I've heard of in there.
Anyone else found out interesting things through this facility? http://www.livejournal.com/interests.bml?mode=findsim I think it's only accessible to users with paid accounts, though.
