Dec. 21st, 2003 05:02 pmI guess I really should do a general update on what I've being doing recently.
On Friday I finished work for this year at the Judge Institute. I've been asked to be secretary to the MBA committee there recently, so I got to go out for a works Christmas lunch with the other staff associated with MBAs. We went to Catz for the meal - I've never eaten there before. It was nice; typical college private dinner-style do. The other secretarial types were clearly very impressed by the wood panelling on the walls...
G is extremely busy with work at the shop atm, as might be expected for a games shop just before Christmas! He managed to get today off, though, which was nice. We'll be going to see his family on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, and mine on the 27th and 28th. My father has just discovered his long-lost cousin Conrad, who has just moved here from South Africa, and is also an engineer - so we'll be seeing him and his wife, as well as my strange aunt Christine, on Saturday.
I'll be taking two OU groups for course U210 next year - one in Leicester, one in Nottingham. Along with this book on spelling reform I've been asked to compile, I should have plenty to keep me busy! Unfortunately, I think this will mean I'll have to put off taking any more OU courses as a student for a while (I wanted to do a series of Maths courses next) as I really won't have time.
The other big piece of news is that I achieved one of my life goals on Friday afternoon: I won angband, as a warrior! Rather like when I got my Finals results, I feel strangely disappointed to have achieved something I wanted for so long...I suppose I will have to come up with something else to aspire to now.
Also, I have been rereading The Selfish Gene. I do like that book. Dawkins has some hilarious turns of phrase - for instance, "A mutant antelope that adopted a 'stand and fight' strategy against lions would be less successful than rival antelopes disappearing over the horizon" or "Anyone who invests in a son has a very good chance of being the grandparent of hundreds of seals"!
Oh yes, and I have finished painting my model hydralisk, Bob.
