Argh. The guy at OUP has now replied, asking for a full book proposal, which I have sent (along with a quickly-produced CV, as requested by his OUP webpage). After sending these things, I have been rereading my mail over and over again, and feeling increasingly that what I sent was flawed or wrong in some way. The more I look at it, the sillier it looks, in fact. Argh.
