I've just written up my annual report for the college on the research I've done this year. This is the last one I'll ever have to write. Tomorrow my fellowship officially ends; I'll go into college and print out the report to deliver, using the fellows' printer, and then hand in my college key. I'll also talk to the office about any other final arrangements that need to be made. It all seems very final.
And I still don't know what I'm going to be doing next. Ten years ago today, I was getting psyched up to go to university for the first time, wondering what Cambridge had in store for me (and hoping it would be better than Oxford). Three years later, I had an MPhil lined up. The following year, I was all set to start my PhD. Two years later, I got the news I'd been appointed to a research fellowship. Now I don't know where I'm going, and for the first time since I was four the new academic year isn't relevant to me. It's all very strange.
Incidentally, fishing out my CUSU diary for 1992, I find that the entry for Saturday October 3rd (the day I came up) reads: "Arrived. Met Kunbi and Raj. Drinks party, met Shira. -> `Varsity', college bar, Blue Boar. Thoroughly pissed. Great!"

Yes, indeed. I feel that this bit of my life is happening rather later to me than to most of my contemporaries, but it was always going to happen in the end... Mind you, I remember feeling far more cut up when I realised I wasn't a student any more, after being elected to my fellowship. And I remember even being briefly terribly miserable when I got my finals results (even though they were all I could have wanted) because it just marked the end of an era.
