How desperately annoying. I had to quit my nethack tournament game actually with the Amulet in my possession, having made my way with infinite annoyance all the way up through Gehennom. There had been a bug when I first descended into the Valley of the Dead, in that no stairs up were generated, and I got the message "Program in disorder - perhaps you'd better quit". But I thought I'd be able to rise through the ceiling by drinking a cursed potion of gain level, when the moment came (I know you can't level teleport with the Amulet normally, but I thought cursed gain level was possible). However, it turned out not to be possible, so I was stuck irretrievably in the Valley of the Dead, and had to quit. Bollocks.
