Mar. 29th, 2003 03:15 pmWow, _another_ academic job in my field has come up, that I'm going to apply for! Unfortunately it's in Oxford, and unfortunately it's only for three years, but otherwise it's absolutely what I want to do. This time the subject is Old and Middle English language and literature, history and use of the English language, and probably even a bit of Old Norse. Fantastic! And it's entirely language teaching and supervising (well, they call them tutorials, but they're actually supervisions :-) - no lecturing required (which is great, because I find lecturing deeply nerve-wracking). The applications procedure is similar to the medieval Celtic lectureship one, but happily not quite so extreme - they only require 6 copies of my CV, not 11.
I'm really really excited about the possibility of this job. It would be a shame to leave Cambridge, but Oxford at least is familiar to me (though I don't particularly like it as a place), and the academic environment and teaching style would be very similar to the ones I've been used to. G is willing to move, though he'd rather stay if possible. So, in the unlikely eventuality of me being offered both positions, I would certainly opt for the Cambridge one (in my old undergraduate department); and if we did have to move to Oxford, it would only be for three years - we could always come back here in the end.
