Feb. 28th, 2005 08:14 pmWell, we are now in our new house, and very nice it is. We began moving things over by hand last week (mostly books), and nearly all the rest was moved yesterday with the invaluable help of the ever-trusty
robinbloke,
the_mendicant (whose car we used) and
mobbsy, who performed prodigious feats of weight-lifting involving huge boxes and monitors. After the others departed yesterday evening, we set about unpacking and installing everything. Obviously one of the first things to get working was the network. To my immense relief, my very elderly Linux box (iguana) survived the move unharmed and is working happily as normal. (Most of its hardware hasn't been changed since I built it in 1997.)
Today we went back to the old flat to pick up the last few remaining bits and clean the place. G was very helpful with this for a few hours, but then had to go to work, due to evil employers ignoring his request for time off to move house. I am now absolutely shattered after 6 or 7 hours solid oven scrubbing, fridge defrosting, floor mopping, carpet brushing (the hoover doesn't really work), surface wiping, bathroom scouring, skirting board dusting, fabric cleansing, wall washing and furniture shifting. And then lugging all my cleaning equipment back over the bridge to the new house, where I tripped and distributed it all over the doorstep. After hurting my back and knees over the last few days, carrying heavy objects and packing and unpacking loads of stuff, my fingers are now mangled and torn from so much cleaning (and vicious cleaning products) and several of my nails have broken off :-(
I cannot cook tonight. We will have a takeaway.
