Well, we are now in our new house, and very nice it is. We began moving things over by hand last week (mostly books), and nearly all the rest was moved yesterday with the invaluable help of the ever-trusty [livejournal.com profile] robinbloke, [livejournal.com profile] the_mendicant (whose car we used) and [livejournal.com profile] mobbsy, who performed prodigious feats of weight-lifting involving huge boxes and monitors. After the others departed yesterday evening, we set about unpacking and installing everything. Obviously one of the first things to get working was the network. To my immense relief, my very elderly Linux box (iguana) survived the move unharmed and is working happily as normal. (Most of its hardware hasn't been changed since I built it in 1997.)

Today we went back to the old flat to pick up the last few remaining bits and clean the place. G was very helpful with this for a few hours, but then had to go to work, due to evil employers ignoring his request for time off to move house. I am now absolutely shattered after 6 or 7 hours solid oven scrubbing, fridge defrosting, floor mopping, carpet brushing (the hoover doesn't really work), surface wiping, bathroom scouring, skirting board dusting, fabric cleansing, wall washing and furniture shifting. And then lugging all my cleaning equipment back over the bridge to the new house, where I tripped and distributed it all over the doorstep. After hurting my back and knees over the last few days, carrying heavy objects and packing and unpacking loads of stuff, my fingers are now mangled and torn from so much cleaning (and vicious cleaning products) and several of my nails have broken off :-(

I cannot cook tonight. We will have a takeaway.

Moving's a bitch, isn't it? Still, at least you're done...

Cavendish Road - left off Mill Road just after the railway bridge. It's not very far from our previous flat which was actually on Mill Road, but is substantially larger and nicer, with a garden, shed, laundry room, shower, big kitchen with gas rings and much storage space, window ledges and wardrobe, and no stairs. And a real rubbish collection, and a moderately sensible address that the Post Office can actually find. (All these things were absent in our previous place. Except the stairs.)

well done for persisting with the old flat, and for eventually finding somewhere that irons out the creases. we're hoping to move house some time soon, and that will be a lot tricky! but nontheless, i don't envy you the task of cleaning up (my only rental from an agency meant that i did loads of cleaning and still got hit for 30 quids worth of dusting).

Mmm, takeaway's well-deserved. If it's any consolation, although my back didn't like our recent house rearrangement, after a couple of days of being better-treated it became happy again.
