Moisture

Oh wonderful - we have rising damp in our hall now. A builder from the letting agents just came round and checked out the moisture in the wall with a special device that looked a bit like a tricorder - it's risen about half a metre up the wall. They will have to rip all the plaster out, reinject damp proofing stuff into the bricks, remove a concrete block from outside which is adding to the problems, and replaster it.

We spent much of the year trying to get them to fix the leak from the flat roof over the hall and bathroom - now water is getting in from underneath. The kitchen ceiling still occasionally leaks when upstairs take a shower, and the bedroom has serious condensation issues because the windows are jammed shut. This house is plagued by moisture-related problems!

Yuck, I hate dampness. You have my sympathy!

Is it correspondingly cheap, or can you move elsewhere forthwith?

It's reasonably cheap for Cambridge; our previous place (similar price) wasn't damp but was much smaller and had no rubbish collection (seriously!), and the other one-bedroom flats we looked at for similar rents were either very small or very grotty. Our current place is nice is many ways - it has a garden, it has a large and pleasant kitchen (in spite of the leak!) containing a proper freezer, and best of all, we are allowed to keep a cat in it. If we moved now (which I really don't want to do, since it's taken all year to convince the OU to send important stuff to my current address) we would almost certainly not be able to keep Stella.
