A little while ago, [livejournal.com profile] valkyriekaren posted this about some rather charming-sounding books involving homosexual relationships, for young children. Today I get this disturbing and ludicrous chain email forwarded to me by a former OU student (who seemed nice enough at the time), who seemed to have sent it to her entire address list:

Subject: What The Government Does Not Want You To Know

Find out what the government doesn't want you to know
[broken links]
From this coming Wednesday it will be law that ALL children in ALL schools MUST be taught about homosexual sex and relationships, using explicit material. That includes YOUR CHILDREN and those of your friends, no matter what their age.
TELL EVERYONE IMMEDIATELY THAT THERE'S STILL TIME TO PROTEST.
This Government has secretly manipulated the parliamentary process to pass THE SEXUAL ORIENTATION REGULATIONS which will FORCE YOU to accept gay sex education for your children and, even more incredibly, will likely criminalise you if you ever say anything that a homosexual feels is insulting. You no longer have the right to bring up your children as you want to, or to disagree with homosexuals about their agenda and lifestyle choices.
If you are FED UP of being insulted by homosexuals as being "homophobic," "bigoted," and equivalent to a racist, just because you don't agree that children should be taught about gay sex and relationships, then be at PARLIAMENT SQUARE AT 12 NOON this coming WEDNESDAY 21ST MARCH for 1 hour.
This is a peaceful but determined demonstration by ordinary people who don't agree with the homosexual agenda to abolish the family and criminalise 99% of the population.
We're running out of time ? PASS THIS ON TO EVERYONE in your address book and let's make sure everyone knows what the government is up to.
[end of email]

Ick.

Oh dear - what a poisonous pack of lies.

FWIW, I can't find anything on the web about a demo on this subject on that date (though Mark Thomas is doing an anti-war thing, and there appears to be an animal rights event then too). Hopefully just a few loons.

Ah - have tracked down the unpleasant little beasties. The demo is being organised by some people calling themselves "Christian Concern For Our Nation"

http://www.christianconcernforournation.co.uk/

They're calling it a 'prayer vigil' rather than a demonstration, but from what I witnessed of the last lot of hysterical fundies outside Parliament when this bill was going through, it's likely to be anything but quiet.

It's interesting that the email I was sent doesn't seem to mention a religious aspect to it. I wonder if my student realises she's been taken in by a bunch of fundamentalist loons?

"Christian Concern For Our Nation"

Which is in turn an offshoot of the Lawyers' Christian Fellowship (http://www.lawcf.org/), run by this character (http://www.allenovery.com/AOWEB/PeopleOffices/CVDetails.aspx?contentTypeID=4&itemID=6584&prefLangID=410). What an interesting CV he has, don't you think? Almost as interesting as some of his consultancy work (http://www.dca.gov.uk/consult/lcoffice/responses/lc190.pdf)(pdf format).

It's possibly some sort of spam sending itself. You could reply and say did you know you've been hijacked by this offensively intolerant spam and it's probably gone to everyone in your address book...

Heh - it's tempting, but the student certainly knows she's sent it - I left out the comment she added at the top (sympathising with the content of the chain letter), because it was a personal bit of an email, and I felt I shouldn't repeat it without her permission.

Did you reply and express your outrage as her homophobia? I'd have found it hard not to.

I have replied, though I wasn't sure whether there would be much point, really! I said I didn't agree with the message, and gave a bit of polite explanation of my view - but I'm now prepared for a rude response!

You have laudable self control :)

Some of the books do tend to be insipd and sickly. That's just ridiculous though.

Furthermore, they're wasting their time - a vote on those regulations is happening as I type.

And I feel devoutly grateful for it. (AT least, I do if the vote is against homophobic activists! is it going well?)

310 in favour of the new regs, 100 against. Opponents are not happy, but the procedures have been followed so there's not much they can do about it.

Reminds me of a client I had the other week. Client is looking to take on a lodger. "But I don't want them to come back and have sex with someone they aren't married to in my house".

WHAT I SAID: "Well 'immoral' in this context is more meant to cover prostitution. It's possible that it may be illegal to specify that sort of thing in a contract. although you'd need to seek legal advice to be sure. However, you have very strong rights anyway because of the fact you're living at the house. I suggest under those circumstances you just give them notice."

WHAT I THOUGHT: "You are an asshat. Asshat. Asshat. Asshat. I'm damn glad you're not my landlord."

What a prat!

I suppose under those circumstances he should tell the lodger "no guests in your room without my prior permission", then never give permission!

I don't understand why morality is to tied up with who you love and/or have sex with. In the words of Rizzo, "There are worse things I could do".

Some should turn up at that demo to throw a bucket of shit over them.

I'm glad the equality bill has been approved, but amazed that as many as 25% voted against it. Am I just being naive? (a rhetorical question I suppose...)

I wonder if the dissenters believe in this homosexual agenda to abolish the family and criminalise 99% of the population?! (Why did no one at LesBiGay Soc ever let me in on this vital information about our goals...?)
