Just seen 127 Hours - it was really good, but probably the only film I've ever seen which brought me close both to tears and throwing up! Possibly auntysarah would like it (it's about a canyon-climbing accident).

The particular gentleman is quite infamous in the canyoneering world, where cutting your arm off is called "doing a Ralston".

I understand the film takes a fair few liberties though...

Lots of the geography AIUI. The canyons they show him "guiding" through all all collages of several different canyons, and the stuff with the girls in the trailer (I guess that's in the film?) is pretty much all artistic licence, AIUI.

I'd've thought a better defination for "doing a Ralston" was...

Going off, on your own, to somewhere remote and potentially hazardous, without telling anybody and without an effective means of communication.

Not that I know anything about the incident... but I assume that was the case if he was reduced to cutting his own arm off.
