Feb. 1st, 2002 02:47 pmSo, since Monday, G and I have been trying to be quite frugal for the sake of G's bank balance; we did a big shop at Sainsbury's and have been taking turns cooking at home, drinking Sainsbury's Economy Gin :-) and not going out. Well, except for Tuesday night, when WUS restarted at the Kambar. We were meant to be going with R, but were a bit late meeting him in Market Square, and he'd already gone, unfortunately. I'm a bit worried about him, he seems very down, apparently about his German ex-girlfriend. G said last Friday that R _really_liked_ me (and I know what that means, not that it was a particular surprise). All very strange.
Anyway, WUS was pretty good, same music as usual, same people, alcohol not _too_ expensive, since we got the "3 bottles of nasty lager for 5 pounds" offer. Chatted briefly to W, who seemed keen again (apparently he got caught having sex in the loos in the Kingston last night, which is pretty funny). Mainly chatted to G, both perched on a wooden ledge in one corner, which was comfortable and gave us a good view of both the chatting area and the dance floor, while being somewhat secluded. Rather drunken conversation, during which G talked a bit about L, which rather annoyed me, though I managed not to say anything, since it seems to lead to pointless bad feeling.
Also this week, G kept missing work (Monday, Tuesday and Thursday), and is worried he may get sacked before he can resign. He's applying for various IT jobs right now; I filled in an application form for him, as his handwriting is very untidy and hard to read, and might make a bad impression. Almost all week, he's been working on his housemate L's new computer, trying to get it up and running Windows 98. Endless difficulties with both hardware and software, we've been running up and down stairs, swapping hard drives and CD drives in and out like nobody's business, covering the stairs with dangerous lengths of network cable, and so on. At last it all seems to work, though, thank God, since it's been making G very fractious.
I've finished off my Amharic list, and will enter it on the computer later this afternoon, and perhaps call it a day for Afroasiatic then - it's so damn hard to get data for the family. DW has contacted me asking for a report on my research over the course of my fellowship, and an outline of what research I would do if the fellowship were extended for a couple of years. I'll have to write that soon.
Tonight is the Wake for the old sun, followed by dawn Afmaelisdagur on Castle Mound, when mcv will hopefully raise the new sun for the coming year with an invocation in Sahidic Coptic :-) Tomorrow evening is the Candlemas dinner, to which G should be coming as my guest. I hope he behaves!
