Felt very ill yesterday evening, but somehow mustered the energy to go off to the Regal to meet G's old friend AS, who was in town for an interview at Addenbrookes. Looks likely he has a good chance of getting the position and moving to Cambridge, so we may well see more of him in the future. He seemed a nice enough bloke; he seemed to approve of me more once I explained what kind of linguistics I work on - he seemed pretty suspicious of artsy people. Also met his brother George, who's an English student at Downing :-) We ate in the Regal, but after being joined by another university friend of AS, we decided to move on to the Mill. I felt much better by this point, and G and I drank a certain amount of Old Rosie - very nice indeed!
I remember the last time I was in the Mill - it was after my viva, and I celebrated with my examiners over a few pints of Old Rosie. Then they left, but I hung around all the rest of the day, drinking Old Rosie in solitary celebration :-) By closing time I had got wasted enough to approach an unfortunate guy sitting reading in a corner of the pub, and tried to pick him up with total lack of subtlety. He turned out to be a producer for the BBC, and was reading scripts for a projected drama series. I looked at the scripts and told him they were shit. When the pub chucked out, I gave the guy a big hug and asked him to come home with me, but he escaped on the grounds that he had to catch a train back to London... I sometimes wonder what impression of Cambridge fellows he got from that encounter :-)
Anyway, today I feel much better. And G is going to cook omelettes tonight - hurray!
