Oh, I'm happy and drunk and some lovely people have answered my friends' test. (Sorry if the site is occasionally down or fucked; it's not my fault!) Yesterday we put more henna on G's hair; it made a great mess of my room; it dyed my carpet and chair and towels and bowls dark blue or green, but it made very little difference to his hair. Bugger. Still, it's nice and shiny and very dark brown, which I guess is something. I think if he wants it black, he'll just have to bleach it first - since four hours with half a kilo of black henna on it has so little effect! I remember dyeing IWJ's hair bright orange a few years ago - his hair is naturally black, and we had to use industrial quantities of bleach, and leave them on for about 2 hours, after which his hair became bright yellow, and refused to get any paler. He looked like Bjorn Borg; it was most alarming. Another time, I dyed [livejournal.com profile] damerell's hair bright blue - delightful effect, but unfortunately it faded after a week or so.
Anyway, G has been playing lots of shooty with R, and I have been filling in his JSA forms and he's signed on. And I've entered Tocharian data, and - cool! it slots into my tree without disturbing anything else, at a wholly sensible point (after Hittite and Albanian, but before Greco-Armenian). Excellent! There really is very little more I can do on this part of my research (except write it up; bother) - I've now covered all the branches of Indo-European. I guess I can look at branch lengths and try to determine some sort of average rate of change, and hence date for Proto-Indo-European. That would be cool.
Oh, my father finally rang me. He talked nervously, at length, about everything apart from my engagement. Eventually I mentioned it and asked how he felt about it. He said words to the effect of - "you're a big girl now and can do what you like - it's none of my business". Which I guess is the best I can hope for. It would have been nice if he'd been pleased, but hey. I'm pleased; that's all that matters.
