Drunk again. Ah well. I installed my new hard disk in my computer (don't you just hate jumpers that get really stuck?) and fscked my system on my old disk, and lo and behold, it works ok. But I don't trust it. I shall copy everything over to the new disk very soon. I wish I knew what fsck has deleted to sort the filesystem out - it deleted one of my personal files, which I can restore from backups - but it also deleted assorted other system stuff which I couldn't see because it went past on the screen too fast. Perhaps it is saved somewhere; I wonder. Anyway, it can't have been that vital, as it seems to generally work ok.
Ran into RRW at the bus stop tonight (like last night in fact). He said not to worry about my system: since it's Debian, any new brokenness will be lost in the noise of intrinsic brokenness :-)
In other news, G and the other tenants here have to vacate the premises by mid-August. So I guess we'll try to get somewhere to live by then rather than end-September. I also need to find a new job, as does G. Hmmm.

Ah, it was expected really; it was only ever meant as a four-year job. There was a small chance they might have extended it for two more years, but they only do that for at most one person a year, and this year they picked an excellent mathmo I know, who I'm sure deserved the extension far more than me :-)
Thanks anyway, and I hope all goes well for you in the next couple of weeks!
