It works it works it works it works it works!!!!!
After a helpful conversation with PJB at the house-cooling party at Empire last night, it seemed my booting problem might be caused by an obscure geometry mismatch. The BIOS thinks my new disk has 16383 cylinders, while cfdisk (which partitioned and formatted the thing) thinks it has 38792 cylinders (but if I tell it differently, it calculates the disk size as about 8 Gb rather than 20). This problem can be solved by inserting the word "linear" into the lilo.conf file, which makes LILO look for its necessary stuff using measures of the disk unrelated to cylinder number. It never occurred to me that the fact LILO had got stuck mid-loading on the letters LI was actually an error message, reporting this geometry mismatch. How exciting!
Today, I inserted the necessary word, and after only a small amount of additional faff (due to me getting another small piece of lilo-conf wrong) it booted off the new disk. Hurray! But it's really spooky - the new disk is almost totally silent while accessing. I realise now just how noisy my old one was!
Anyway, last night's party at Empire was great fun - G and I ordered a pizza and watched The Crow beforehand, then went to the party and got drunk, and G fought much with MCV and SDE with rubber band guns, and then we came home and drank more and watched Gattaca and sat in the back garden to watch the dawn and finally got to bed about 7 or 8 am. Very silly of us :-)
Today, G was very tired and hung over, so I went to the barbecue at Relativity on my own. Also good fun, lovely food, pleasant conversation with many people, delightful sunny weather. How pleasant and hopeful everything is! I shall do some more work on my book tomorrow, now that my computer is working again!
