Jun. 23rd, 2002 10:14 amYesterday morning, dragged self out of bed at 9 am to go to Sidgwick site in time for final examiners' meeting (IB this time). These meetings are rather like that description of warfare - long periods of boredom punctuated by occasional frenetic argument. Anyway, all got finished quite promptly, after only an hour and a half, so I didn't need to rush to get ready for J and S's wedding. Got G up, we both dressed reasonably smartly, gathered up wine and present, and headed off to the big Wesley Methodist church at the end of King's Street. The last time I was in a church or chapel, it was for V's funeral earlier this year; before that, I went to my PhD supervisor's third child's christening in Selwyn chapel. All tidy and circular in some way, it seems.
The wedding seemed to go well. S arrived quite late, but looked very nice in a most unusual wedding outfit involving a veil and trousers, apparently made for her by a friend. She looked extremely happy throughout the day. J's father, who is apparently a minister in the Methodist church, participated in part of the service. It was a very religious service (more so than the other church weddings I've been to) in which Holy Communion took place after the marriage itself, and most of the congregation took communion. There were about six hymns, much prayer, ceremonial "greeting" of other members of the congregation...well, it was an interesting experience! I'm sure it was just what S and J wanted though, which I guess is what matters. Taking photos outside, we were struck by the appearance of large numbers of cyclists (and a few skaters) having a demonstration - they cycled round and round the roundabout in a pack.
Then, when we all trooped up to Mill Road to St Barnabas' church for the reception, we were confronted by another bunch of protestors, this time of the Reclaim the Streets variety, sitting down at the crossroads at the town end of Mill Road. Very helpful; they paused the traffic long enough for us all to cross safely! Clearly J and S had chosen a significant day for their wedding.
The reception was in a pre-school church-run playgroup hall, so the walls were decorated with children's artwork and religious messages. It felt slightly incongruous to be getting drunk on very nice punch in this context, but still much fun. Oh, I forgot to say, the guests consisted essentially of family, MethSoc and Camgeeks - strange combination! From my lj friends list, were present:
antinomy,
ceb,
chiarklark,
emperor (who was much involved in the whole proceedings, and gave a reading in church),
fivemack,
kaet,
lnr,
meirion,
mobbsy,
razornet and
sphyg. And of course many more people I know who aren't on livejournal (IWJ, CW, SK, RJK, DR, ST, AW, MW...).
Afterwards, people went off in various parties to eat. Our group went to a very nice curry place on Mill Road, where I had a delicious vegetable thali - one of best I've had in Cambridge. Very drunk afterwards, and sleepy - most people went off to a party at Relativity, but G took me home and compelled me to go to bed, while he went off to the KSR to look for people (I don't think he found any). All in all, an excellent day.
