Well, there seems to be a definite consensus in favour of lampshades. I guess I'll have to get some then!
In other news, we are trying very hard to get G a job, any job, and he's spending a lot of time fixing computers (his own and other people's). I am sort of getting round to writing my article for this German conference proceedings. Oh, it strikes me that I haven't yet told my parents about our new flat. I suppose I should do, really, but I'm reluctant to contact them when I know they'll only go on at me about getting my book published, and are unlikely to be pleased about me living with G anyway.

I've actually just discussed this with Jenni (senior admin) in the office. Obviously she can't call up Brook Street and say anything directly, as that would make it obvious that I'm involved, which might get backs up. But she does say she might give them a call to clarify what kind of person they're looking for, and also to make it clear that male applicants would be welcome - she thinks Graham might have been turned down because he's a bloke.

It's not like it's a difficult job, and certainly they don't need a 40-something career secretary. Nor would they expect to get one on these wages!

The job is mainly answering the phones, and putting member details onto databases and tracking cases. There is some audio and copy typing involved, but it's certainly not what most time is spent doing, and this is going to become less a part of the job in the future, with advisors being asked to do more of their own typing where possible. So neither myself nor my colleagues have any idea where Brook Street are coming from.
