Well, Friday wasn't so awful in the end. I gave my supervision, and my students seemed enthusiastic and happy with it. The really really awful thing didn't happen (or rather, something else happened which meant that everything was ok). In the evening I went to meet G, and went with him and a bunch of people from his callcentre to Pure for someone's leaving do. And G seemed more positive about staying in Cambridge by hook or by crook after his contract expires. I still need to rewrite this blasted statement though.
After Pure, went to Trinity and R came round. We drank gin (which to my surprise, R liked - I thought he only drank vodka), and then we went to the KSR where I played an awesome game of pool with G vs. R and someone else. I potted the last four balls one after another, winning the game really fast. Bizarre! Then got taxi with G and R to R's house, where we watched Fight Club (yeay - marvellous film) and drank even more and ate crisps. G got utterly smashed and became strange and moody during the film. Afterwards, he insisted on watching Shrek, and then became upset because I didn't like it. It's just not my sort of film.
Anyway, finally went to bed, and in the morning, got up and played co-op Starcraft with R, until G got up and we compelled him to make a huge fry-up breakfast for all of us (which he had rashly offered to do the previous night :-). It was very tasty. Hung around a bit more, then got bus back to Cambridge (R had left his car in my college). Went to Grafton Centre for R to get contact lenses, to market to buy pixie sticks, and then back to my room for me and G to tart ourselves up for a trip to London.
Walked to station, buying alcohol on the way. Met KB and W at station, and got same train as them. Chatted and painted everyone's nails black on the way (I need more black nail varnish!). Got to London and went to a pub where G and R were playing in a big Vampire game. People tried to get me to join in, but I felt too shy, so I lurked in a corner reading SF.
Then got lift to Slimelight. It was generally really good - danced lots on industrial floor, ate pixie sticks, drank wine, slept a bit slumped against a wall (!), woke up and bounced a lot to 80s pop with R and someone else. Oh, and G got amazingly drunk and difficult again (though at least there was no Pro-Plus involved this time!) and passed out on the floor for several hours. And threatened to kill my friend M if he touched me. And upset me by going on about L, this Brazilian friend of his. And snogged R against his will on the dance floor. But apart from that he was quite well-behaved :-)
It's amusing; G is worried that R has a drinking problem, and R is worried that G has a drinking problem. Both of them have confided this to me, and neither wants to mention it to the other. It's crazy. As far as I can tell, G has more of a problem than R, but then again, I see less of R and know him less well, so I could be wrong. And I'm hardly in a position to make diagnoses of alcoholism anyway.
Today I got an email from the OED SF site, saying they've included my cites. Cool!
