What a groovy weekend. On Friday evening, G. came round right after work. I'd dressed up in black dress, boots and blue corset. G. gothed himself up and we walked to the station. G. was in an amazingly bouncy mood and insisted on getting cider to drink on the train, to start the evening as we meant to go on. G. bounced maniacally all the way to King's Cross, where we ran into A. in the station. Somehow, whenever I go to London, I run into A., even though he lives in Cambridge. It must be some mystical force thing. Anyway, we caught the tube to Camden and hung out in the World's End, where we got free Budweiser as part of an offer. Budweiser is foul, but it was free. We were supposed to be meeting up with various friends of G's, one of whom (DE) had promised to pay for G's night out at the club. However, when he eventually arrived, very late, he said the machine had eaten his card and he couldn't get any money out. So I ended up paying for G. again :-)
Anyway, we had a drink with DE and also with D&D, who arrived then. They all seemed pretty nice people. We then moved to the Devonshire Arms, where we met A. again, and also some guy who claimed he'd seen me at the Calling, though I didn't remember him. I had a long chat with DE about writing games for mobile phones, and groovy plans for roll-up, flexible display screens.
Then we moved on to the Electric Ballroom, which is a cool place. There we met up with lots more of G's friends. I also ran into A again(!). Kitty was also there, and we talked for a bit; to my surprise, I even ran into djsd, who was there after the Dream Disciples' gig. We chatted a bit, but he and G. seemed to get on extremely badly, so it wasn't a long conversation.
Generally I had a really good time at the Ballroom - I loved the music and danced a great deal. I also drank a lot. Unfortunately, part way into the evening I got into a weird mental state - extreme paranoia about random little things - which kind of freaked G. out. But he was very nice about it and calmed me down, and I was fine for the rest of the evening. Afterwards, we got some slices of pizza from a street stall, and then slept in a really nice flat in Camden, owned by some friend of DE's, who coincidentally used to do my subject at Cambridge, and had been taught by the same people as me. Anyway, it was a totally cool flat, huge and impressive and in a great location right next to the market. We slept on the sofa that night, then got chucked out relatively early in the morning by this friend of DE's. We walked through Camden Market back to the station. G. was feeling extremely ill, but I felt fine. I don't really get headaches.
We got on the train and came back to Cambridge, and crashed out in my room for a couple of hours. Then we changed our clothes, and went off to the KSR. Quite a good evening there, played a bit of pool with G and J and E. I think I'm getting better at pool, I had a few really good shots, quite difficult angles. We'd planned to go back in a posse to G's place afterwards for a pissup, but everyone else seemed tired or ill, so in the end it was just me, G and G's housemate L. G was pretty disappointed about this, and also about the fact that his brother I. and DE hadn't turned up that evening. But back at the house, we drank some wine, and played a three-way game of You Don't Know Jack, which I won quite convincingly. Then L. got tired and went to bed. G. insisted on watching Blade Runner at 3 am, after which we went to bed.
We had to get up pretty early on Sunday too, as we were going to see G's family in Welwyn. There was lots of hassle with train tickets and missing trains, and we ended up getting there about 5pm. G's family seem nice - he has two younger brothers, I and B. His parents are Scottish and quite religious. G and I had to sleep in different rooms that night, which was kind of annoying. Anyway, we had an Indian takeaway for dinner, and then G, I. and I went to the local pub (whose name I've forgotten). Had a nice quiet drink and chat, then went back to the house and slept.
Had to get up very early this morning to catch a train back in time for G. to go to work. Today is G's actual birthday - I'm going to give him a box set of classic Blizzard games - Starcraft, Warcraft and Diablo. G. will have to fix his computer first though - the keyboard's bust.
Anyway, good times.
