Hm, haven't had much opportunity to write since Monday. Monday night, met up with G who was feeling down after a bad day at work; we went to his place, he cooked big omelettes for us (very nice!) and we drank almost a bottle of Sainsbury's Economy Vodka with orange juice (70cl bottle of vodka!) - actually, I think I drank most of it myself. _Very_ wrecked; most amusing, what I remember of it. Was actually cheerful-drunk, not morose or paranoid. Wandered downstairs and waffled at G's housemates about Linux and linguistics :-) Chatted to G upstairs, insisted on French-plaiting his hair, and kept knocking the (closed) bottle of vodka over due to missing coordination.
On Tuesday, we were both v. hungover and didn't do any work. In the evening, it was the Calling, and G went to the KSR first with a random friend Leon who'd just turned up to visit, while I went back to college and got ready. Calling was good; spoke to R about my work, to GC about SF, and to O about random stuff. G took a little speed and was kind of weird after we got back; kept going on about his dream of going to Australia to see the next eclipse, or of becoming a pilot.
Wednesday, I forced him to get up and go to work, with some difficulty. By that point, my cold (which I've had for a few days now) was really quite bad, and I stayed in bed most of the day trying to recover. Pm, met G again. He was jubilant, having managed to get two weeks paid holiday from work, starting next Monday. Great! He says he's going to learn Perl and look really hard for a job, but I suspect he'll mostly play online shooty!
So, Wednesday night, G and I celebrated the good news with another bottle of vodka, and G played lots of computer games while I sniffled and revised some Japanese. Oh, and I also made dinner, which G really liked.
This morning, G and I were really hungover again, and he didn't go in to work; didn't even manage to ring in sick. I stayed at his place almost all day playing Diablo, while he slept or read (he's working his way through my copy of the Gap series). My Diablo game is going pretty well - I'm playing a rogue atm, she has a groovy bow and good armour, and she's using healing spells rather than potions, which seems to be working quite well. She's ExpLev 18 or so, dungeon level 10, and currently struggling to cope with evil demon dudes who zap huge electric bolts through the air, poison-spitting dog-like things, and big bat-like guys who pretend to be statues until you get close. Fun!
This evening, G was going to come with me to the SF group's curry meet, but he said he didn't feel well enough, so I went on my own. We met up in the Castle first for drinks, then went over to the Maharajah, where we had a table booked for 8.30. They were really crap about seating us though; we didn't actually get our table till about 9.20, and the main course arrived about an hour after that, and they got mhf's order wrong too. Bah. Nice food though - I had a Vegetable Thali, which of course I couldn't finish, but which tasted lovely.
Got back to my room afterwards, to find a note from the head of the Faculty, saying that VL died on Tuesday night. She was a fellow in my college, in my department, and responsible for my own fellowship application a few years ago. She'd had breast cancer for a couple of years; I guess it finally won. I feel kind of bad that I was out at the Calling, dancing and getting drunk, the same night she was dying. I'll go to her funeral soon, I expect.
