Sep. 2nd, 2002 09:32 amWell, it has been a busy weekend! Went to Edinburgh for G's parents' 25th wedding anniversary celebration, and met large numbers of his family (mostly called Graham). We left on Friday morning, spent several hours on the train (which wasn't delayed particularly, for once!) and arrived in Waverley Station mid-afternoon. Met up with I. and B., G's brothers, and gave I. his stereo which we'd taken up for him (he's just got a new place in Edinburgh). Then set off with B to find G's uncle's place, stopping only to get G some ties for work on Monday, and various gifts for people. Unfortunately, B forgot the way to the house, so we ended up getting a taxi.
Met G's uncle Graham, his wife Annie, and G's three cousins Graham, Matthew and Charlotte (all under ten). Had nice meal, and then went out with I. for a few drinks that night, in a pub called the Golf, which was remarkably expensive (L2.60 a pint, anyone?) but did stay open until about 1 am. Next day, went off for the celebratory lunch at a small hotel in the countryside near Dollar. Extremely tasty meal; also met G's grandfather Graham (unfortunately suffering from dementia somewhat), his grandma (let out of hospital for the day; she fell ill earlier in the week), and some old friends of G's parents. The ages of the people attending the meal ranged from 6 to 93! All seemed to go well, to everyone's relief.
As soon as we got back to Edinburgh, G and I went off with B to see I.'s new flat, which is spacious and quite flash for student accommodation (but pretty untidy already!). We had meant to go out and have a few drinks, but B started making spliffs and somehow we never got the motivation up to go out after all. I. decided to play his new computer game, and B realised he had to be back at his uncle's place by 10.30. We were a bit concerned he might get lost on his own, so we went back with him (fortunately, I was still relatively unstoned, so I managed to guide us back - G and B weren't in much of a state to find the way). G's uncle was still up when we got back, and probably could tell that we'd been smoking, but didn't seem to mind, as he went straight to the kitchen and provided munchies for the others, who were desperately hungry by now :-)
Yesterday morning I got up fairly early and spent most of the day chatting to G's aunts, and putting up with small children creating havoc around us. G slept until mid-afternoon, and then we departed into Edinburgh. We hung around in a bar for a bit before getting on the train, where we decided to get drunk (I'm not quite sure why). When the train got delayed for about an hour part-way between Edinburgh and York, it didn't really seem to matter (although we did then become concerned that we might miss our connection at Peterborough). But it was all ok in the end; got back home about 11.30, and went to bed shortly afterwards.
This morning, up bright and early at 7, as it's G's first day at his new job. He went off looking like... well, a goth civil servant, in black suit with new purple tie and velvet jacket :-) I'll probably meet up with him for lunch, and see how it's going. I also have to do quite a bit of shopping. GC is coming over for dinner tonight!
