This weekend, we went to London. First, met my aunt at Kew Gardens station, and then went to Richmond Park instead for a picnic because it was free to get in. My aunt had made some lovely vegan sandwiches, and brought some Asti which she'd got as a present, so we consumed these sitting by a lake, with deer wandering by. Very rural for the middle of London! Then went to a pub called the Ship, where I bought my aunt drinks and G made her cigarettes (my aunt is a penniless actress). We had a fantastic time, talking about everything under the sun. She gave us a video of a play she was in recently (unfortunately, in the absence of a video or TV, it will be hard to watch!). She seemed to like G immensely, and told me she thought he was very deep :-)
Then headed off to Islington to see G's aunt V and her partner P. Since P can't eat dairy, and I'm vegetarian, the dinner was also vegan (and rather unpleasant, unfortunately - stuffed aubergines are perhaps not best cooked in a microwave). Both V and P seemed lovely people; we talked mostly of cats. P seemed rather hostile about the idea of marriage to begin with, but she was very friendly after a bit.
Then, having picked up a bottle of ultra-cheap, ultra-nasty vodka, we went to Slimelight (rather expensive since G didn't have his membership cards). Slimelight was rather less dramatic than the last two times we've been; we danced a lot and drank our vodka mixed with orange squash and chatted a little to people (G complained that there were few people there he still knew). Towards about 4.30 he entered a maudlin phase, and declared that the DJ disliked him because he hadn't played G's request. This seemed to depress him to the point where he passed out on a small and rather precarious stool next to a little table. I spent the next two hours trying to stay awake myself and prevent G from slipping off his stool :-) At about 6.30, Dom, an old friend of G's from his previous time living in London, came and woke G up, since we were going to his place to crash for a bit. Dom is an ageing reprobate who looks a bit like Keith Richards after a heavy night. He drove us off to his place, reassuring me that he
hadn't touched a drop (class As only :-) We stayed at his place, in one of his lodgers' rooms (unbeknownst to the lodger), and the next day, he gave us a lift to the tube station. Very nice of him. Oh, I noticed one of [livejournal.com profile] kitty_goth's business cards at his house, too.
In Camden, went to the Devonshire Arms, which was very crowded. G's friend DE arrived in a bit, and hung around with us for a few hours. We had thought we'd go to Bodyworlds, but it seemed rather expensive, and rather late in the day, so we resolved to go there on some future occasion with DE. Instead, we ate at a nice greasy spoon, and then wandered round the shops drooling over expensive things. G was particularly taken with a black and white diablo. We didn't buy anything, though, and after another quick drink in the Dev, headed home, consuming on the train the chocolate popcorn and pistachios my aunt had given us, and the dregs of our foul vodka and orange!
