Couldn't write an entry yesterday due to network problems. On Wednesday evening, G's friend R drove round, and we bundled G's computer into his car, and went to Bar Hill via the enormous Tescos of Doom to get a pizza. At R's house (which is very nice but lacks heating) we set up G's computer, and also moved two of R's computers downstairs. This left us hungry and in need of liquid refreshment, so we ate the pizza and drank wine or vodka, depending on taste, and listened to the Orb (to my amazement, G had never heard "Little Fluffy Clouds" before!).
Later in the evening, there was considerable difficulty setting up the LAN so that all our computers could see each other. R's own computer was particularly intransigent, so G and I had a quick game against 1 computer (Starcraft), which we won with a little effort. At last R's computer played ball, and we had a melee game, just the three of us, which I won fairly easily. Then we tried playing jointly against 3 computers, but they kicked our butts, so we downgraded to vs. 2 computers, but even there we couldn't quite cope. Fun though. We tried to play Unreal Tournament, but again, had problems linking up, so we settled for Aliens vs Predator. I played a marine, and was pretty shit at it, but had a good time anyway. :-) Then we realised it was 5 am, and G decided he wouldn't go into work the next day. We slept at R's place that night and got up very late the next day (yesterday).
R drove us back to Cambridge, where we dropped off G's computer at his place, then drove into the centre, where we said goodbye to R. While walking up to Bradwell's Court, we passed a woman with a small child. The woman was saying, "You don't really want such a thing for Christmas, surely? You don't want to end up like your cousin or people like that, dying your hair black, and wearing bits of dead animal wrapped around yourself, and huge boots, and piercings, and growing your hair long...". She was clearly basing her description of such undesirables on G, as we walked past her! It was hilarious. She concluded, "Wouldn't you rather have a skateboard?"
In the evening, went to the Salisbury Arms (no one was going to the Kingston this week, since they were all seeing Lord of the Rings) where G's friend L, who works in Games and Puzzles, was having a birthday drink. Also met L's friend Ferret, whose girlfriend works behind the bar there. Had a pleasant enough evening. The others chatted about computers and roleplaying, mostly. The jukebox was pretty good. I also had a bit of a chat with L about Sumerian.
Oh, the other day, I did my Christmas shopping and got things for my parents. I got my mum some slippers with penguins on, and wanted to get her a Metallica tape, but after wandering around half of Cambridge, concluded that nowhere sells music tapes any more, or at least, not a reasonable selection of them. Even Jay's Records and Tapes don't sell tapes. So I got a CD and will make a copy onto tape for her when I go home. I also got my dad a big coffee table book about classic cars, which he should like. Very pretty. And got some fancy chocolates for them both. Also got some cards for some of my other relatives. That will have to do.
Don't have anything more profound or interesting to write today!
