Well, it looks like I have a job teaching at the OU in the East Midlands next year! They rang on Monday, and arranged an interview in Nottingham which happened yesterday (exhausting day of travel - 5+ hours on train, 2 hours wandering around Nottingham trying to find the centre, three-quarter hour interview :-) My interview seemed to go well, and at the end they offered me the post, subject to satisfactory references and sufficient student numbers (which they said looked very promising atm). It would be at the Northampton centre, though I'd only have to go there to give tutorials (which are nothing like tutorials in Cambridge _or_ Oxford) about once a month - most of the teaching is done remotely. So, I'm pretty pleased about that. It wouldn't be anything like a full-time position (I definitely couldn't live on the pay) so I'll have to get other employment as well next year. But it's a start; it keeps me in academia; it has prospects for taking on further courses in subsequent years, or taking on a
full-time position with the OU, so it's a good thing. All very exciting.
It was weird going to Nottingham again - the last few times I've been there were at the start of my relationship with D, who used to live there. The station area, the Broadmarsh shopping centre, the central square, various restaurants and pubs we went to, all looked familiar for that reason. I was amused while walking up the Mansfield Road to see a post office with a single advert in its window: Golf Balls in Stock now!!! Only 30p each! I wondered why this particular product seemed so worthy of advertisement :-)
Calling was on Tuesday - good time, very trashed. Talked much to [livejournal.com profile] surje, [livejournal.com profile] naranek, [livejournal.com profile] hallucinagene and [livejournal.com profile] technotom. No [livejournal.com profile] simont there, though, who I usually talk to at the Calling. Oh yes, also had long discussion with [livejournal.com profile] robinbloke who we have got hooked on Dungeon Siege for the moment!

You did find the three chests in the small walled section in the corner of her garden? They had some great stuff when I went there (but I guess there's a random element in the game, so maybe your chests were crap).

I'd just acquired a shiny new cold and decided sitting on a sofa feeling grotty was better than paying to get into the Calling and feeling grotty there :-( Sorry about that...

great stuff! it's so excellent that it's mostly remote... will make it much easier to find another job to fill in the gaps and the wages. it wasn't so many months ago that you faced lots of uncertainty... so many things are coming together now, your patience and hard work has paid off. Hurrah!
