Hmm, just came across a charming example of racism in (presumably) the Post Office. A bit of mail had been (mis)delivered to our HMO, addressed to someone with an Asian-sounding name. Someone (obviously not the sender, which seemed to be Tesco) had scrawled across the envelope in black marker pen a puerile insult about Osama bin Laden, motivated presumably by an assumption that anyone who might perhaps be Muslim must be a terrorist. War on childishness, anyone?

One despairs. The level of ignorance about the whole thing is frightening; even the Beeb presenters occasionally confuse Asian with Muslim, let alone that most Muslims don't approve of bin Laden and wouldn't be involved in his or anyone else's terrorism.

War on lynchmob culture? hmm, seems a bit recursive.

I'd suggest that sort of thing's more likely to happen in Cambridge or similar small town, where the West Asian population is small. In London most people know Muslims (and Sikhs, and Hindus) personally, so it's harder to be so prejudiced (though you obviously still get the 'I hate all Pakis. Except for Ahmed down the road, he's OK' attitude'. It's sad, though.
