Today I went to Nottingham for an interview, for teaching the new OU course E303: English Grammar in Context. It seemed to go quite well; at least, they didn't ask any questions I couldn't answer, and they seemed pleased enough with what I said. I still have a bad feeling about the result, though. Mind you, as G pointed out, I am generally pessimistic about such things, so my bad feeling doesn't necessarily say anything useful about the likely consequences! I was convinced I would do disastrously in every one of my GCSEs, A levels and degree examinations, after all...

Pessimism after the deciding event can, I suppose, only have two outcomes: either your doubts are vindicated, or you're pleasantly surprised. Optimism after the event will result either in vindication of one's hopes, or disappointment - which makes pessimism seem a safer plan, in a way! But if pessimism makes you worried and lacking in confidence before/during the decisive event itself, I guess it's a much less helpful attitude than optimism.

In some ways I feel like the hypothetical counter-inductivist: "just because all previous events of this type have had a particular result, doesn't mean the same will happen now; rather, it must be time for a change!" Happily I don't seem to apply this approach to everyday life e.g. crossing roads, making dinner... :-)
