Well, for all my feeling of doom last night -

I got the job!!

I am so so pleased; the course looks so interesting to teach, and will involve learning new things too e.g. corpus linguistics, even more functional grammar...and I won't have to mark 40 essays all on the same topic or at the same time - it's fantastic!

My interviewers must have made their decision pretty damn quickly, because the interview finished just after noon yesterday, and they informed me I'd got the job by a letter which arrived this morning! I feel sympathy for the other candidates, but am still so happy!

congrats! it seems to me that interviewers usually do make up their minds pretty quickly; they certainly did when i got this job at oxford brookes, since they let me know before i'd even made it back to cambridge!

Excellent! Is this full-time, or will you need another admin job to fill in?

Date: 2004-09-14 07:06 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] vyvyan.livejournal.com
It's not full time, no, but together with my existing appointment to teach another course, I should make enough to live on! I really don't want to go back to the admin. I'll have finished my probation next year too, so I'll be on the higher point in the salary band, which should improve matters somewhat!

Double congrats in that case! Oh, and we're stocking up on grammatical questions to ply you with, such as the conjugation of 'would' and 'should' : P

Out of interest

Will this involve travel or is this work from home?

Um, both. Giving tutorials will involve occasional travel to a centre in the East Midlands (probably Leicester or Nottingham, as for my existing course); distance tuition can be done from home (marking essays and projects, giving advice by phone or email).

They were similarly quick with my AL job a few years back -- I got the impression then that if you were called for interview you might well already have the job. Though actually I'm not sure from what you're saying whether this is an AL job or something more exalted...

Date: 2004-09-14 07:03 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] vyvyan.livejournal.com
It is another AL appointment, for a new course (alongside my existing appointment). While the interview 2 years ago seemed pretty much a foregone conclusion (I was the only interviewee; it was at short notice due to someone else backing out of their appointment) this one was far less so: they had already interviewed other people, also well-qualified for the position, they told me; also, due to the more specialised nature of the course, they could only appoint one person in the region to teach it.

While not obviously more exalted, a level 3 course should be a bit more interesting to teach than a level 2 one! I'm certainly looking forward to it.

Looks like we both have big grins on our faces today :) I hope this will make things a little easier for you both and that you can start to enjoy your job (weird and wonderful that it is!)
